Flight Instructor Rating (FIR) - Grade 3

Attaining your Flight Instructor Rating with Command Flight Training will allow you to conduct theoretical and practical flight training, on the ground and in the air.

 

For those looking to gain their Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) and begin working as a pilot, the Flight Instructor Rating is a valuable qualification that can present greater opportunities for initial and future employment in a challenging but rewarding part of the industry.

 

Private Pilot Licence holders who wish to conduct training can do so if they hold a Flight Instructor Rating (FIR), but are limited to conducting design feature endorsement training only.

The Flight Instructor Rating course offered by Command Flight Training is highly-regarded in the industry. Command Flight Training's Chief Flying Instructor, Gary Pullman, has over 5000 hours of instruction time, with many of those spent teaching others how to teach. 

​

Many of our students conduct the FIR part-time, two days a week. With 100 hours of face-to-face briefings and approximately 30 hours of flying, the FIR normally takes about 4 months part-time.

Requirements for the issue of a Flight Instructor Rating:

​

  • Hold a Private Pilot Licence (PPL), Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL), or Air Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL)

  • Hold a tertiary qualification in education, a Certificate IV in Training & Assessment, or complete training in Principles and Methods of Instruction (PMI)

  • Minimum of 200 hours flight time with at least 100 hours as Pilot In Command (PIC) or have graduated from a Part 142 with a CPL

  • Pass the Instructor Rating Examination – Common (theory)

  • Pass the Instructor Rating flight test with at least one training endorsement
