RA-Aus to CASA Recreational Pilot Licence (RPL)

The Recreational Pilot Licence conversion in recognition of your RAAus Pilot Certificate is a relatively simple process with no exam required. It requires training to a GA standard to pass the RPL Flight Review.

Gaining your RPL with Command Flight Training will allow you to fly solo, in fair conditions, within 25 nautical miles of the aerodrome.

Requirements for issue of a Recreational Pilot Licence:

  • Be at least 16 years of age (training may commence prior to the 16th birthday)

  • Complete the relevant flight training

  • Undertake a general English language competency assessment

  • Pass the RPL practical flight review

  • Minimum of 25 hours total flying time

  • Minimum of 5 hours as Pilot In Command (solo)

  • Hold a CASA Class 1 or 2 Medical Certificate or a Basic Class 2 Medical Certificate

For pilots who wish to convert their RAAus Certificates to an RPL:

  • If converting with no additional endorsements, expect 5-10 hours

  • If converting with cross country endorsement, expect 10-15 hours

We understand that RA-Aus schools can offer a varied level of training standard and in various types of aircraft. Therefore some students may take longer to adapt to the heavier GA aircraft as well as the stricter procedures when operating under CASA.
